Phoenix WordCamp 2009 Archives - (Something Something Social Media: The Overdue Minority Report)

My talk at WordCamp last week.

People have made social media into this one big meta term when as Merlin mentions, is just people talking to each other. I don’t know why some insist on sandwiching together PR and Community, Publishing and Sharing, Friends and Audience. That can be in theory a good thing, but the problem is that it creates unclear expectations. Are you talking to me? or are you networking with me? I’m I just a reader/follower/what have you? or am I part of the community?

Anyway, really great talk. Funny and awkwardish moment at the QnA when the lady said the she didn’t know him.

Article from Neojaponisme describing their almost paranoid obsession with privacy when it comes to using the web. Here are some of their concerns:

User Trepidation
• A total and comprehensive refusal of Japanese social network site users to post real pictures of themselves (and often, real names)
• An obsession with ultra-long and complicated mobile-email addresses as a spam prevention measure, despite the fact that its effect may be minimal, especially when weighed against the inconvenience.
• A lack of user generated media — YouTube clips, in particular — featuring Japanese faces and real names. Many performers, despite virtuoso-level skills, wear masks or otherwise obscure faces in their video content.
• The predominance of anonymous sites like 2ch as the main corridors of internet culture.
• Blog writers, who have not established fame through other media, almost never reveal real names, even when the information and service provided is of professional quality and not explicitly personal. (More on this here.)
• The local discomfort towards Google Street Maps — debated on somewhat cultural-essentialist grounds — vastly outweighed the benefits for the louder section of Japanese users, forcing Google to plan a re-shoot of all the streets with a “lower angle camera.”

Theories on how and why it goes Up and Down

How and why the number goes up since it started has been apparently simple. The more Likes and Reblogs you get, the higher the score gets. But I think the algorithm is a little more complicated, or depending on your outlook, more retarded than that. I have observed that on some rare instances the score also goes up when you reblog someone. And not because someone liked what you reblogged, but apparently by just the act of reblogging. It looks like it wants to encourage reciprocation and that’s cool, but even if you maintain that kind of healthy participation, the number will go down no matter what.

Why it goes down is totally what the fuck. At first I thought that it was based on the ratio of posted items and the likes you get. But I dropped that theory when the score went negative at the same time I got a like. It goes down if you stop posting for a couple of hours, it goes down if you keep posting, liking, or reblogging. Fuck, it goes down. I know the Tumblr peeps have stated that this will happen to everyone to offer a fair share of “discovery” and what nots, but almost everyday there’s a j-p-g pic on the popular page.

I’m not against the ranking of Tumblelogs and I hope this doesn’t come of as another “popularity contest are stupid blah blah hoo hoo ha” rant. If you want to “compensate” tumblrs based on their merits, good. Do that. But don’t get all Kindergarden on us saying “Come on now Charlie, Fred is special too”. I know it’s too early. The Tumblarity thing has been going on for just a couple of weeks, but if the idea is to give 50,000 tumblelogs a fair share of exposure, I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks that’s pretty god darned unrealistic.

I think it was lonelysandwich who said that a game without rules is not much of a game. I’m all for games, but it’s not much fun when you don’t understand what’s going on.

To end this: You can’t be both meritocratic and socialist. You can’t be both Catholic and Evangelical.
